When it comes to winter and caravans there are a few simple things you can do to prevent frost damage to your taps / appliances. So before you stow your wobble box away for the frosty season take a look below at our recommendations to help avoid costly repairs.
Drain down your water
Inside your caravan or motor home near the hot water storage tank you will have a yellow drain valve. This usually the case for Truma and Whale systems
Truma drain valves are open when the yellow part is sticking up in the vertical position.
Leave all Taps open in the centre position
So this means your kitchen tap, vanity washbasin tap / washroom tap and shower. By opening the taps and leaving them in the middle position allows air to rush into the system which breaks any vacuums on both the hot and cold side. This will ensure all water in the system can exit via the drain valve properly.
It's also worth mentioning about the shower hose.. Do yourself a favour and disconnect this from the tap. Time and time again we have phone calls and messages around easter time (or the first time using the van after winter) from people saying that their shower tap is leaking or that the cartridge is split or damaged. What normally happens is that a small amount of water inside the shower hose runs back towards the tap and sits in the tap cartridge, Jack frost turns up and then Crack!
